Dans som tillämpad livsfilosofi vid Robert Steijn, 23-27 sep HAMMARFEST

Robert Steijn kommer under dessa dagar genom praktiska övningar, och framförallt genom samtal öppna för en personlig filosofisk diskussion kring din egen värdegrund i ditt koreografiska arbete, vilka värden vi återser i den samtida dansen, och hur dessa värden speglar samhället i stort. På så sätt kommer vi genom workshopen att beröra aktuella etiskt, existentiellt präglade filosofiska frågeställningar, som omsätts i vår danspraktik. Workshopen är okonventionell och experimentell som erbjuder ett forum för att dig att reflektera över den konceptuella sidan av ditt arbete och nya sätt att föreställa dig din koreografiska praktik.

Robert Steijn är en av våra mer aktiva pedagoger inom dans, koreografi och dramaturgi i Europa. Generationer av dansare, koreografer har blivit ledsagade av honom vid School For New Dance Development i Amsterdam.

Robert är den första dans-dramaturgen i Holland. Han har utvecklat ett säreget förhållningssätt till dans och koreografi. Dramaturgi för honom är en fråga om att hålla kanalen öppen att tänka, lyssna och drömma, utan att ta något ansvar för form, struktur eller tolkning. Som dramaturg han vill dansa genom alla möjliga virtuella verkligheter av tankar och associationer.

Det personliga är det universiella. Vi kommer fysiskt att sträcka på påståendet med hjälp av konstnärlig praxis utvecklat av surrealisterna på 20-talet, men också andra verktyg för presentation av självet i en performativ kontext.  Dessutom utvecklar vi egna verktyg för att vårt konstnärliga arbete: 50% genom att arbeta intuitivt och 50% genom att analysera kritiskt.

Presentation Of The Self and Developing Performance Tools. Using tools such as ‘automatic writing’, a technique developed by surrealist artist in order to enter the subconscious, and ‘automatic doing’, a translation by Vera Mantero of that same technique, inscribing ones mind onto the physical space, the workshop participant becomes aware of what their recurrences, what they are interested in, concerned with at that particular moment.

In the first part of the workshop, we focus on the development of each participant’s awareness of self in a performative context. A series of tasks from Vera Mantero’s work, takes one further into a confrontation with oneself, how one sees oneself and challenges the participants to expand their borders of what they are able to present of themselves.

Later in the workshop we start gathering recurrences, both personal, in the group, physical events and theoretical approaches, which we then pursuit further in the continuing work. The general body of work will continuously be discussed in the group.The workshop invites the participants to develop their ability to look, to read what they see and to develop a discourse based upon that.

The approach towards work by developing an awareness of recurrences in ones performatic actions, is a technique or method that I have used in my last three works, “O, Still” “Dear Everybody” and also in “Until the moment when God is destroyed by the extreme exercise of beauty by Vera Mantero”. I am interested in continuing to develop this approach: Instead of thinking of work as something I must create from new modes of thinking, acting and moving, I try to become aware of the way I already am thinking, acting and moving and try and understand what are the mechanisms behind it.

Vad är förhållandet mellan scenografi (arkitektur) och filosofi? Vilka möjligheter är inbäddade i relationerna mellan det språkliga och det rumsliga? Det är fundamentala principiella överväganden som är i fråga. Där vi ibland tycks låsa oss vid förutfattade föreställningar om att det är ett gap mellan det lingvistiska och det spatiala, mellan språket och världen. Men vad om det inte existerar ett gap? Vad om scenografi och filosofi opererar på samma fält? Vad för potential kan vi få ut av att förstå relationen mellan språk och icke-språk i vårt scenografiska arbete? Med andra ord hur förhåller sig å ena sidan det scenografiska rumsliga arbetet till att utveckla filosofi, och å andra sidan det filosofiska språkliga arbetet till att utveckla scenografi?

Sex inbjudna koreografer samt lokala dansare/koreografer och scenograf Jens Sethzman kommer att närma sig dessa frågor i en praktisk workshop. Där gruppen prövar det ovannämnda kryssfältets potential i scenografiskt arbete för dans. Gruppen varvar diskussioner med praktiskt tillämpning av dessa.

What is the relationship between stage design (architecture) and philosophy? What potential is embedded in the relations between the linguistic practices and the spatial ones? It is like entering a field whose fundamental principles of operation are in question. However it sometimes have been mired in the presupposition that a gap exists between the linguistic and spatial, between language and the world. But what if no gap exists? What if the field in which stage design and philosophy operates is inclusive of linguistic and spatial practices?  What potentials steam from understanding the relations between language and not- language? In other words, how does on one hand the spatial practice of stage design develop philosophy and on the other hand how does the linguistic practice of philosophy develop stage design?

It will be a meeting with a group of people. Starting point / meeting point will be in Kaai Theatre Studio in the center of Brussels.

How do we interact as a group and as individuals?

How does one develop different types of awareness’s in a group situation?

How do we challenge our self as a group and as individual in the group?

How can we place our self into unknown situations and then learn how to deal with it?

What happens when different worlds meets?

The meeting in Brussels will be an exchange of different types of energies: A search for experiences that we can have together as a group and as individuals. Get into dialogs, have verbal and non-verbal discussions.

Everyday we will work on some specific exercises and then we will work with improvisations in the studio. We will also be open for any possible reasons to get out of the studio and dive into other places in the city, or outside the city.

Through the use of slight displacements in the relationship between body, object, place, we will look for ways to see how we can extend beyond borders, create dreamy and absurd in-between worlds. How can we find methods that have the power to stimulate our imagination?

Expanding Matter.

Tanken med projektet är att utveckla den konceptuella sidan av koreografi. I fokus är deltagarens konstnärliga utvecklings arbete och att denne intar en mer kritisk och reflekterande hållning till sin praktik. Workshopens äger rum på olika platser för att på så sätt etablera ett gränssnitt mot den lokala dans- & konstmiljön och därmed skapa en mer dynamisk och varierad förståelse för vad koreografi kan vara.
